Artist's statement [ back ]

I am an artist currently living and working in Helsinki, Finland. I make drawings, paintings, videos and installations.

My paintings and drawings are figurative, full of color, contrast and details. My videos resemble moving paintings and often include performative elements. All of my work is based on drawing. Drawing is my mother tongue.

My main interest is to examine and portray human relationships, especially families. We all belong to at least one family. The most powerful scenes of our lives are played inside our homes, with our loved ones. The family is indeed a cradle of big events and big time drama. I attempt to portray things as I see them instead of saying what is wrong or right. I sincerely want to show what bothers me or makes me laugh. I am interested in what makes people tick. In other words, I investigate hierarchies, power structures and the ways we behave in close relationships, which I feel can be seen as repeating patterns in our society in general.

I admire and respect female artists with long careers, who have succeeded in continuing making art, despite all hardships. I intend to follow their example by living long and continuing my work, since making art is definitely the most important thing in my life.
