Garden - Recession time paradise?
Garden (2009), the third part of an animation trilogy by Pirjetta Brander
(b. 1970), a multitalented visual artist who fearlessly tackles topical
subjects, will see its Finnish premier at FRAME's Project Room, Cable
Factory, on 18 March 2009. The animation completes the triptych alongside
the two previously released animations, Purgatory (2007) and Single Room
(2008).
A garden acted as the starting point for the trilogy's third part, but
Brander who is known for her critical thinking did not simply transform the
idea into a paradise space full of flowers, fruit trees and useful plants.
Instead, she has given us a negation of a garden: the rise and fall of a
hedonistic garden created by a highly charged industrial culture. In this
garden, factory chimneys bring about the idea of paradise and carry
industrial products: wine bottles, sausages, donuts and ice cream, all
referring to abundance and feast parties. The paradise's table is set with
products of abundance - pleasure and happiness are results of consuming,
eating and drinking.
Brander's work, which resembles a living painting, is particularly topical
in recession time Finland: a party time is inevitably followed by a
downturn - the paradise turns to hell.
The soundscape composed by Raoul Björkenheim creates a musical garden.
Guitar sounds grow to baroque grandeur and resemble the gentle tinkling of
the Finnish string-instrument Kantele, suggesting the innocence associated
with paradise.
